چکیده

The loss of a hand can greatly affect quality of life. A prosthetic device that can mimic normal hand function is very important to physical and mental recuperation after hand amputation, but the currently available prosthetics do not fully meet the needs of the amputee community. Most prosthetic hands are not dexterous enough to grasp a variety of shaped objects, and those that are tend to be heavy, leading to discomfort while wearing the device. In order to attempt to better simulate human hand function, a dexterous hand was developed that uses an over-actuated mechanism to form grasp shape using intrinsic joint mounted motors in addition to a finger tendon to produce large flexion force for a tight grip. This novel actuation method allows the hand to use small actuators for grip shape formation, and the tendon to produce high grip strength. The hand was capable of producing fingertip flexion force suitable for most activities of daily living. In addition, it was able to produce a range of grasp shapes with natural, independent finger motion, and appearance similar to that of a human hand. The hand also had a mass distribution more similar to a natural forearm and hand compared to contemporary prosthetics due to the more proximal location of the heavier components of the system. This paper describes the design of the hand and controller, as well as the test results.

Biomimetic Design and Development of a Prosthetic Hand: Prototype 1.0

This paper reports the biomimetic design and development of a prototype of extreme upper limb prosthesis. The motivation for developing a new prosthetic hand is provided by the fact that low functionality and low controllability are the most important reasons why amputees do not use their prosthetic hands. In addition, although multifingered hand prosthesis has appeared in the market, the cost ...

On the Desing and Test of a Prototype of Biped Actuated by Shape Memory Alloys

In this paper the design of a biped robot actuated with Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) springs with minimum degrees of freedom is presented. SMA springs are a class of smart materials that are known for their high power to mass and volume ratios. It was shown that utilizing spring type of SMAs have many advantages as large deformation, smooth motion, silent and clean movement compared to ordinary typ...

Mechanical design of a shape memory alloy actuated prosthetic hand.

This paper presents the mechanical design for a new five fingered, twenty degree-of-freedom dexterous hand patterned after human anatomy and actuated by Shape Memory Alloy artificial muscles. Two experimental prototypes of a finger, one fabricated by traditional means and another fabricated by rapid prototyping techniques, are described and used to evaluate the design. An important aspect of th...

Biomimetic Impedance Control of an EMG-Based Robotic Hand

The number of extremity amputations resulting from workplace mishaps, traffic accidents and other incidents has shown an increasing trend over time, although the importance of safety management and the prevention of such accidents is fully recognized. Since precise and complex motion may be very difficult in the daily activities of amputees, the development of prosthetic systems is necessary to...

Optimization of fuzzy controller for an SMA-actuated artificial finger robot

The purpose of this paper is to design and optimize an intelligent fuzzy-logic controller for a three-degree of freedom (3DOF) artificial finger with shape-memory alloy (SMA) wire actuators. The robotic finger is constructed using three SMA wires as tendons to bend each phalanx of the finger around its revolute joint and three torsion springs which return the phalanxes to their original positio...
